Tom Ripley is now the owner of a beautiful estate in France, a wealthy art collector and married to an heiress.

The Buckmaster Gallery is staging an exhibition by the celebrated artist Derwatt, but an American collector claims that the expensive masterpiece he bought three years ago is a fake. It is, of course, and he wants to talk to Derwatt - but Derwatt, inconveniently, is dead. Ripley needs the perfect solution to keep his role in the fraud a secret and his reputation clean, but not everyone's nerves are as steady as his. Especially when it comes to murder.

Ripley Under Ground is an ingenious audiobook of masks and identity, illusion and reality, and is followed by Ripley's Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley and Ripley Under Water.

I recently re-read this Ripley mystery for probably the 3rd time. My appreciation of Highsmith's writing increases with each re-reading of her Ripley series. This one may be my favorite. Amazingly, it remains a page-turner. One of Highsmith's genius moves in writing this series, for me anyway, is how sparingly she inserts Ripley's wife, Heloise. When she appears I always think "finally" Heloise is home! Of course, when this happens Ripley is up to his neck in murder and mayhem and Heloise's appearance adds to the tension. Read and enjoy and then sometime later read again!

Ripley Under Ground A Virago Modern Classic (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Highsmith Adam Sims Hachette Audio UK Books Reviews

Dexter has nothing on Tom Ripley. It's less about the body count than it is about how Ripley will walk away with his skirts more-or-less clean. It has a beyond-belief ending. I'm looking forward to how his relationship with his wife plays out in later novels.
As a character, it is gratifying that Ripley is not drawn as someone without feelings or regret, although in the end, his sense of self-interest and self-preservation is blood-chilling.
as good at "the talented mr. ripley", but in different ways. particularly enjoyable if you've spent any time in the french countryside... though the book is decades old, much of country life remains the same, as vividly described in highsmith's economical language of the day.
Great story, but the e-book formatting is sloppy. Many errors, including omissions of speech marks, punctuation dropping out and sometimes strange words appearing which probably happened due to bad scanning from a print version. Virago needs to lift its game!
The Ripley series is one of my favorites; Patricia Highsmith was great at suspense - the kind that comes of a measured pace and seemingly innocent characters/happenings leading to a twist or a tense moment - or a murder. The inner workings of Ripley's mind are labyrinthine, fascinating and well thought out. I highly recommend the series; they're a combination of a fairly easy-breezy read and an intelligent thriller that grabs your attention and won't let go. Easy to read in one shot, in a few hours, if you're so inclined.
The Talented Mr. Ripley is my favorite book, so I thought I'd better continue the series. I really enjoyed Ripley Under Ground, but for different reasons - and I definitely like the first book way better.

I liked Talented because I felt like we could really understand Tom's motives - his desire to be accepted among the wealthy, his obsession with Dickie, his insane jealousy, etc. But in Under Ground I felt like his motives had sort of changed and I had to get to know the character all over again. Same with Ripley's Game and The Boy Who Followed Ripley (I have yet to read Ripley Under Water).

Having said that, this book was good in its own right. Tom's lies still get all twisted and complicated and intertwined, which is what I loved about Talented. You do have to suspend disbelief at times but it was always entertaining and interesting, and never SO crazy that it took away from the experience. I definitely recommend it if you liked Talented, or if you like crime thrillers.
I read it right after talented Mr. Ripley, but I probably should have waited a bit the underground was written 15 years after ththe first one. And in the years since I feel like understand the emotional motivations in the second one as I get a little older. ( like don't wait 15 year to read it or any things I just wouldn't read them back to back)
Ripley Underground was marvelous, I thought. I am puzzled by those who found it implausible (surely not compared to the machinations of The Talented Mr. Ripley!). The premise is simple an artist kills himself and his gallery owners and supporters keep him alive by forging his "future" work. Entirely plausible I thought because if someone is supposed to be alive, artwork by nature is supposed to evolve and change.

As the scheme begins to unravel and the now bon vivant Ripley is threatened, the sociopath simmers to the surface and springs to action. Descriptions of Ripley as J Gatsby are pretty apt. We are told Gatsby has killed but not how. Highsmith fills in the blanks with Tom Ripley showing just how far the arriviste will go to assure their arrival is undisturbed.

Highsmith is a clever writer. The reader knows there is now a wife, but she is kept off stage til the last third of the book when she has a role. And she is, unsurprisingly quite the suitable mate for Tom. I am curious in future books to see how the author manages the ever climbing body count that seems to rise wherever Mr. Ripley appears.

Inquiring minds are already asking questions, making connections. I am curious to see the answer Highsmith provides.
